Student Story: Stephanie Light
"During all my struggles the first semester I had a small support team around me which included my boyfriend, mom, friends from Michigan and Ohio, and most of all my success coach Mallory Huffman. Without having all the support they gave me I wouldn’t have been able to do it."
Hi my name is Stephanie. When I first started taking college courses I was married with one child and just found out I was going to have another. After having my second child I ended up going through a nasty divorce and ended up failing my classes that term. With only six courses left to graduate I dropped out. Five years later, I moved to Indiana from Michigan and decided that it was the time to better my life. I was going to start over.
The first month here my boyfriend and I were staying with my cousin and I decided to research online colleges—I didn’t have a means of transportation because everybody I knew worked. That’s when I came across Ivy Bridge College. Within a few hours of inquiring I got a phone call.
During my first term my boyfriend and I ended up getting our own place, so I ended up not having a computer or internet service. I would go to my cousin’s house or to the library to use the computer. As time went on, it got harder for me to go to the library because I got a job and the hours didn’t work very well. Going to my cousins was hard too, because it got too loud with the kids and I couldn’t concentrate on my work there.
That’s when I decided to get a laptop from a rent-to-own place. I had a laptop to do my work on but I still didn’t have internet service so we would drive around until we found free Wi-Fi so I could do my work. We did this for almost the whole semester.
As the month of October neared and it started to get cold it got harder to live in the apartment because we didn’t have any heat. At the end of October our land lord decided to put a small heater by our kitchen that heated the kitchen but nothing else. In November we made the decision to move into an extended stay hotel and that’s where we are today.
During all my struggles the first semester I had a small support team around me which included my boyfriend, mom, friends from Michigan and Ohio, and most of all my success coach Mallory Huffman. Without having all the support they gave me I wouldn’t have been able to do it. They pushed me hard not to give up. There were times I wanted to throw in the towel. Because I didn’t have internet it became hard and stressful. There were even times I would login on my phone just to do some of the discussions. There were also the tutors that I reached out to because I did not understand a few things. I really enjoyed having the opportunity to use all the resources that come with attending Ivy Bridge College.
My plan when I graduate is to get a job in my course of study and continue my education. I also plan on getting multiple degrees in a few different fields.
Thanks so much Ivy Bridge College for all of your support and this is a wonderful opportunity!
