Student Story: Holli England

Being a college student has made me realize that I am capable of doing anything that I put my mind to.

Hello to everyone at Ivy Bridge College,

My name is Holli England, and I have been a student here at Ivy Bridge for almost two semesters. I first heard of Ivy Bridge online when I was browsing for schools. When Ivy Bridge first appeared, I thought to myself “I am going to take a look into this college,” so I did. I filled out the request for more information, and not even twenty-four hours later I received a phone call back. I was asked some questions, and I asked some right back. It was about an hour-long conversation on the phone, but somewhere in the middle of that conversation I had already made my mind up that I was going to apply for Ivy Bridge, so I did. That was one of the best choices in life I had ever made. I was excited to get started -- all I had left to do was wait on my books to arrive and for the first day of class. I had decided to study criminal justice, because I have always wanted to become a crime scene investigator.

My journey with Ivy Bridge has been a wonderful experience. About a year ago I tried a semester with Phoenix University, and I had a horrible experience. There were no success coaches, tutors, or instructors that would call you if your grades were dropping. I failed a class by one point, and the school wanted me to pay them $2,000 cash in order to re-take it. I could not take any other classes until I paid for the class I had paid for and retaken the class I’d failed. After that experience, I was not quite sure if I would ever go to college again.

When I first talked to my enrollment coach and financial aid advisor from Ivy Bridge, I was very nervous, but after the first 10 minutes of the conversation I started to relax and realize that this school was so much better than the school I had first attended. My enrollment coach was very nice and understood what I had gone through with the University of Phoenix, and that made me feel comfortable and confident that I could go to school again and succeed. My financial aid advisor went over every step of the FASFA and helped me fill it out so that I got everything done right the first time, and that moved things along a lot faster. They both made me feel very welcome here at Ivy Bridge.

I was very anxious to get started with my first online class, and I checked several times to see if the classes were posted before they were even supposed to be. On the day I started my online classes I had already decided that no matter how hard this was, I was going to go through with it every step of the way. I have enjoyed my online classes so much, and I log on every day to make sure I have all the work that is due ready and turned in on time. I have really enjoyed all of my classes so far, and I don’t think that I have a favorite, but if I had to choose one I would say that I like my English classes the most. All of my instructors have been more than nice and are always willing to help me if I need it. The tutors of the classes have also been very nice and send me their information so that I am able to contact them if I need to. The tutor I needed help from was prompt to contact me, and was very helpful with the information. I also like how the tutors have the webinars that I can attend every week if I need to.

During my time at Ivy Bridge I have had a lot of support from my husband and a few friends, but the person I get the most support from is my success coach, Mallory. Mallory calls me at least once a week to see how I’m doing, asks me if I need anything, gets me help where it is needed, and always tells me how well I am doing. Mallory also tells me how proud of me she is and gives me good advice when I need it. If it wasn’t for Mallory, I would probably be lost. She returns my phone calls and emails quickly, and if she has not heard from me, she will contact me right away to make sure I am okay. Mallory is a wonderful success coach.

Being a college student has made me realize that I am capable of doing anything that I put my mind to. I have had some very bad experiences throughout my life, and I never thought that I would be doing anything besides working fast food. I am also a mother of three daughters who give me a lot of trouble. My oldest daughter is twelve going on thirty, and thinks that she does not need to go to school to get anywhere in life. By attending Ivy Bridge, I am able to show her that I am going to school so that I can have a good career and that if you want to get far in life than you must finish school and get a degree. I want my children to see that if I can do it than so can they. I want better for my kids than what my mother was able to offer me. I also want my children to want even better for their children. Ivy Bridge and the staff have really made this a wonderful experience for me.

After I graduate and get my associate degree, I am going to move to a bigger city and get a part time job working in the criminal justice field. While I am working, I am going to continue going to school here at Ivy Bridge for a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. My long-term goal, once I get my bachelor’s degree, is to either become a crime scene investigator or a criminal profiler. Both of these careers are something that I would enjoy very much. I want to help catch criminals and put them in prison where they belong. This degree will help me show my children that you can be anything you want, and that if you want to get anywhere in life you have to work for it because it is not just handed to you.

My advice for any new students at Ivy Bridge is that no matter what you do, just try as hard as you can, and you will make it. Make sure you do all your work, and answer all the discussion questions including responding to your peers. Do not be afraid to ask for help, and if you have a problem, email your instructor. Everyone at Ivy Bridge is here to help you succeed in your career, and to help you with everything you need. I wish all the new students the best of luck, and hope you get what you are looking for here at Ivy Bridge.

I would really like to thank my success coach Mallory Huffman for always being there when I need her, and for having the confidence in me to do as well as I am. I would like to thank all my instructors for being patient with me, and helping me when I needed help. I would like to thank Kyle, my financial advisor, for helping me fill out the right forms so that I have loans to pay for my schooling. Thank you all at Ivy Bridge -- you are all so wonderful for helping me get to where I am today. Ivy Bridge College is the best college ever.
