"Until my graduation day, it never felt like I would actually finish high school and be a college student! It still feels like a dream, but it’s true and it feels great! "

Ivy Bridge student Emily Sloan Hi, my name is Emily Sloan. I am 18 years old and currently live in Bullhead City, Arizona. I honestly never even dreamed that I would get this far with my education. I knew that I did well in high school and kept a 4.0 GPA, but until my graduation day, it never felt like I would actually finish high school and be a college student! It still feels like a dream, but it’s true and it feels great!

My family has never been rich—even before my mom, her boyfriend (who might as well be a father to me), and I moved from California. College seemed so far away for me financially, but I was able to pull through. Currently, our family is struggling, but we are managing to get by. Both my mother and I are looking for work, though I am looking at part-time jobs to make it easier for me to focus on my studies too.

I don’t remember exactly when I made this decision, but after college I want to become a zookeeper. I have always loved animals and I grew up around cats and dogs, which I suppose made me want to care for bigger ones.

I sided with Ivy Bridge because it really fits with my needs. Currently, my family has no means of transportation, so going to the community college out here would be troublesome. However, after looking into Ivy Bridge College more, I found that my problem could be solved. I could easily get started here and not have to worry at all, which made me very happy. My experiences so far have been extremely helpful. My success coach has been very helpful. She makes sure I am motivated and gives me plenty of useful information. She has helped make everything a bit easier while I push through all of my work.

After my time here at Ivy Bridge ends, I plan to transfer to a university to continue towards my goals. I know I can do it with hard work and support. Everyone I know has been so supportive of me. I really could not have gone this far without them. To everyone who supported me—my mom Apryl, “step-dad” Chris, loving boyfriend Joshua, my amazing friends who if listed all separately would take far too long, and my success coach Sarah—I thank you all from the bottom of my heart and can only ask you to keep supporting me. I promise to make you all proud and will not let your support go to waste. I will succeed and be the best zookeeper I can be while achieving happiness.
