Student Story: Brenda Massey
"My first quarter was the hardest three months ever. I had problems getting approved for financial aid up until the last week of the quarter. We had a tornado come through Georgia. I was without power for a week and a couple days. I didn’t have telephone service—home or cell. I couldn’t get on the computer to do my homework."
My name is Brenda Massey. I live in Madison, Georgia where I was born and raised. I have five children and twenty grandchildren. I am a breakfast cook and baker at Perk Avenue Coffeehouse/Restaurant in Madison, Georgia.
I decided to attend school online to take a course in computers and information technology in order to learn all about computers and software. When I start my new job as kitchen manager in a new restaurant that’s opening I will be using a computer a lot.
I chose to attend Ivy Bridge College at Tiffin University. My first quarter was the hardest three months ever. I had problems getting approved for financial aid up until the last week of the quarter. We had a tornado come through Georgia. I was without power for a week and a couple days. I didn’t have telephone service—home or cell. I couldn’t get on the computer to do my homework. The local library was also without power. A week later I had a virus on my computer. And then the next week a tornado came through Georgia again, we were without power again, and I couldn’t do any homework.
But still, I kept in touch with my instructors. I caught up with all my homework. I was on the phone with someone at Ivy Bridge College throughout the whole quarter, and they were wonderful. They assisted me with whatever problems I had. My success coach Anita Stark kept in touch with me, helped me stay on track in my classes, and gave me strength to get through the day. I passed that quarter with an A and two B’s.
Through every crisis I kept in my mind that, “Joy cometh in the morning.
