Happy National Poetry Month!
"Poetry is language at its most distilled and most powerful." - Rita Dove
Hello students!
April is National Poetry Month and here at Ivy Bridge College we're celebrating by sharing some or our favorite poems and poetry resources with you.
National Poetry Month was started by Academy of American Poets in 1996 as way for publishers, writers, and readers of poetry to celebrate poetry and its important place in American culture and our everyday lives. Visit the Academy of American Poets site to learn more about the month and find 30 fun ways to celebrate; download a free poster; locate poetry events happening near you; and, of course, find plenty of poems to read and enjoy!
As poet Naomi Shihab Nye states in her poem Valentine for Ernest Mann...
poems hide. In the bottoms of our shoes,
they are sleeping. They are the shadows
drifting across our ceilings the moment
before we wake up. What we have to do
is live in a way that lets us find them.
Maybe if we re-invent whatever our lives give us
we find poems. Check your garage, the odd sock
in your drawer, the person you almost like, but not quite.
And let me know.
This month, take Naomi's advice and live in a way that allows you to find the poems hidden in your daily life. And share with the rest of us here at Ivy Bridge!
Think about her words—where are your poems hidden? In the smile of the grocery-store checker, the knot caught in your daughter's hair, in the last line of your ENG 142 reading, or the favorite song that comes on the radio the moment you get in your car? Start checking.
And let us know!
